BRIEF STATEMENT
For many Americans the US healthcare system is deplorable. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) attempted to resolve the crisis by providing healthcare for all and curtailing increasing cost. In its application, however, the ACA is becoming too expensive for moderate income Americans and therefore, making healthcare once again unaffordable too many. Without addressing any particular healthcare reform “Alonso the Dream and the Call” dramatizes the consequences of not being able to afford healthcare within the context of the immigrant experience.
Immigrants have come to this country in pursuit of the American Dream. However, if healthcare is increasingly unaffordable to many, how does that affect the American Dream? The film raises this dilemma and questions the notion of upward mobility in a country that cannot afford to provide adequate healthcare to those who need it.
