"The Bull & Matador" is a family crime drama that subtly infuses elements of the gangster genre to delve into themes of denial, harsh realities, and the limits of love. Drawing comparisons to "Ozark" and "Breaking Bad," it similarly explores the dark intersections of family and crime. However, unlike these, our characters are Latino, donning sharp suits, killer shirts, and slick cowboy hats, reflecting the world I grew up in and adding a distinctive cultural flair. “The Bull & The Matador” is about the heavy toll demanded by truth while dismantling the myth of the "American Dream," exposing the blood-stained foundation upon which success in America often rests. |
Rey, a brilliant young engineer, is on the verge of a career breakthrough with a polymer invention that could revolutionize solar energy. Days away from securing an investor, he clings to the notion of the American Dream, denying his family’s criminal ties and believing his success is entirely his own.
Rey’s older brother, Paco, known as "The Matador," is both a feared killer and a leader in the violent world of money laundering and drug trafficking. Forced into this life by their mother, Alma, Paco sacrificed his dreams of becoming a professional soccer player for the survival of their family. Consumed by self-loathing and suicidal despair, Paco seethes when he learns of Rey’s plans to abandon the family.
In a desperate bid to make Rey confront the truth and understand his pain, Paco delivers an ultimatum: become an accomplice to murder or be dragged into the drug trade. Rey is forced to confront the devastating truth: his success is built on the blood-stained foundation of his family’s sacrifices.
As he grapples with forgiveness, loyalty, and the limits of love, he realizes he cannot remain in the family—even at the cost of his life. In a final act of redemption, Paco sacrifices himself, freeing Rey to pursue his dreams while carrying the weight of his family’s heartbreak and the dismantled myth of the American Dream.
